Meet Our Staff:


Listed here are the primary staff members of the Castle Rock Institute. In addition to these people, the Institute hires a number of part-time outdoor instructors, international adjunct faculty, support staff, teaching assistants, and international guides.


Jerry Stone
Jerry Stone
Jerry is the President and co-founder of the Institute. Over thirty years ago, he developed and taught a college program similar to Castle Rock at Mercer University. He has many years experience as a college administrator, advisor and counselor. His experience as an outdoor instructor and guide for the past forty years includes rock climbing, backpacking, whitewater boating, and spelunking. He is currently an advisor to a number of schools, universities, and outdoor organizations.



Jeff Carter
Jeff Carter
Jeff is the Dean and professor of Religious Studies at the Institute. Also a co-founder, he received his doctorate in the History of Religions from the University of Chicago and his Master's degree from Harvard University. He has taught at Vanderbilt University, Davidson College, and the University of South Carolina. He received a Fulbright Fellowship to study in Nigeria, is an All-American college athlete, and a published author. He has also worked as a hiking and climbing guide for more than fifteen years.



Deborah Fitzgerald
Deborah Fitzgerald
Deborah is the professor of Philosophy at CRI. She earned her Ph.D. in Philosophy from the University of Iowa, and her Bachelors degree from Northwestern University. She has taught philosophy at Furman University, Ohio State University, and Wofford College. Her primary area of research is Aesthetics, but she has presented work in Ethics, Epistemology, the Philosophy of Feminism, and the History of Modern Philosophy.



Leigh Cohen
Leigh Cohen
Leigh is the professor of Art at the Institute. She is a ceramic artist, educator, and graphic artist. With a B.A. from the University of Miami and an M.F.A. from the University of Nebraska at Lincoln, she has also studied at the University of Florida and the University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth. She has taught at the Odyssey Center fro the Ceramic Arts in Asheville, North Carolina, and the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. She has worked with a number of artists and exhibited her work throughout the United States.



Virginia Meyn
Virginia Meyn
Virginia is the professor of Literature at Castle Rock. She received a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Yale University, an M.A. in English from Ohio State University, and a B.A. in English from Duke University. She has studied in Germany and Austria, and has taught German and Comparative Literature at Brown University and English and Humanities at Skidmore College, the University of California at Irvine, and Saddleback College, where she served as Chair of the Humanities and Languages Department and directed several NEH grants on Latin American and Asian literatures and cultures. She is a published author.



Jenny Howard
Jenny Howard
Jenny is the Head Chef and Food Manager for the Castle Rock Institute. In addition to a B.A. in Design from Converse College, she holds a C.C.P. degree from the Ballymaloe Cookery School in Shanagarry, Ireland. There she studies under Darina Allen. She has also been trained by several Master Chefs including Anne Quatrano, Kevin Rathburn, and Shaun Doty. She has worked in Atlanta, Georgia as a food stylist, and at the Watershed Cafe and the Indigo Grill.



Camine Fuhriman
Camine Fuhriman
Camine is the Head Resident Advisor and Outdoor Trip Coordinator at CRI. She has a B.A. in education from Utah State University and an M.S. in Experiential Education from Minnesota State University at Mankato. An accomplished whitewater paddler, swimmer and gymnast, she is certified as a Wilderness First Responder, Whitewater Boating Instructor, Red Cross Lifegaurding, and Swift Water Rescue. Camine manages outdoor trip logistics, group dynamics, and student affairs.



Jenny Jakubcin
Jenny Jakubcin
Jenny is a Resident Advisor and group leader for Castle Rock. She holds a B.A. from Lenior-Rhyne College, and is a Registered Nurse. She is a certified Wilderness First Responder, and Whitewater Boating Instructor.
